St. Andrew Dung Lac and the Martyrs of VietNam

I am so proud to be the descendant of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. There are more than just 117 martyrs. The actual number of people who were martyred was about 130,000 Catholics. The reason that only 117 were canonized was that their deaths were recorded on paper by a Jesuit Missionary in VietNam, Father Alexander de Rhodes. For the rest, the accounts of their martyrdom were not recorded, but just circulated orally.

There a story told of a young martyr, Phu-Yen, who, when he was about to be beheaded, and people offered to put a mat on the ground to absorb his blood, he insisted that they let his blood pour to the ground, so that it could bear fruit. No doubt the Catholic Church and the Catholic faith in Vietnam have grown and have borne fruit through the blood and intercession of the martyrs. The Catholic Church in Vietnam was a persecuted church from its birth. Still now, the church is still being persecuted under the communist regime. Many faithful are still imprisioned and beaten because of their faith. Many churches are being taken away; religious celebrations are still being restricted.

Something we can do today:
Please say a prayer for the Catholic Church in Vietnam
